Worker Spends Every Hour Of Every Day In Kennel Until Dog Finds Forever Home

By

It's a tough life for a dog living in a shelter. They may spend weeks on end desperately hoping for the special person who will take them home. And even when they do, that's not necessarily the end...Lana was one of these pups. She was living as a stray when they found her and took her to the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA. Lana was quickly adopted but after a happy three years, she ended up being returned to the shelter in April, reports The Dodo.

Of course, she just wasn't used to shelter life after all this time. Luckily, somebody was looking out for Lana.Whitney Steele, the shelter's director of volunteers and events, felt a real connection with Lana. So Whitneybegan a "sit-in" to raise awareness for the pup and try to find her a forever home. She joined Lana in her kennel all day every day.

No one can really know what a dog goes through in a shelter untilthey've gone through it themselves. So just like Lana, Whitney slept in the kennel on a dog bed. Marketing and communications manager Michael Morefield tells The Dodo:

Whitney is learning a lot about what Lana goes through every day, and even though we have an amazing facility, it's not a comfortable, loving home.

Whitney gained a new appreciation of her own life, experiencing the "hard realization" ofLana's everyday loneliness. But it wasn't all doom and gloom: local businesses were so moved by Whitney and Lana that they began delivering food to the pair in the kennel!

In fact, theywere gettingalong just likeany other roommates.

The shelter, and Whitney in particular, just wanted to show everybody what a fantastic dog Lana is, and a dog that really deserves a forever home to take care of her properly. And after a tough four months all alone, Whitney's efforts to show Lana off were a success: the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA announced on their Facebook page that Lana found a new home just a few days ago.

So that more pets just like Lana can find the homes they deserve, you can help support the ASPCA in the US or the RSPCA who help rehome abandoned pets in the UK. Please remember – adopt don’t shop!
