Eventually, unable to deal with the hunger anymore, Mystic made an escape attempt, just to try and find something to eat. However, she was weak and lost, and with nowhere else to go, the starving dog ended up returning to his kennel.Luckily, a neighbor saw the canine and immediatelyrecognized his terrible condition. He knew that he had to help and contacted the Fondation 30 Millions d'amis, who, with the help of local police, was able to intervene and get the two animals out of their nightmare.

Flore, an investigator from the French organization describedthe dog's living conditions as:

[...] full of excrement. They only had a tiny, dirty piece of foam to sleep on. Their bowls were empty... They shouldn't have made it out alive.

The vet was appalled by the state of the two canines. Mystic weighed only 65 pounds, half of what a healthy dog of his age and breed should weigh. He was also suffering from Pyoderma, a painful skin condition, and his mouth was full of lesions and plaque.Max was equally as underweight and had many scars on his body from previous injuries. The pair had clearly been neglected and treated badly for a long time.
