This retired American man had clearly had enough of going on adventures by himself. Instead of finding a new hobbie,he decided to adapt his kayak so that histwo Golden Retrievers could come along with him.
It all started when this former orthopaedic surgeon saw his dog Susie get into the baggage compartment of the kayak all by herself.Their first outing was a great success! Susiesoon got hooked on this new activity that she could take part inwith her beloved human.
When David and his wife decided to adopt another dog, Ginger, it was out of the question that he would stay on the dock. So David decked out his kayak with another slot so that he could take both of his canine companions with him. He toldTheDodo:
When we got Ginger, I just put in another hole. It's like a triple kayak, only there isn't enough room for the paddlers to put their feet — but it's perfect for a dog.
Susie and Ginger can sit comfortably while Davis rows and enjoy the ride. According to David, the dogs are very well-behaved in the custom kayak and know how to stay safe:
They are trained to get in the kayak themselves on command. They sit down, and off we go. When we come ashore, they'll stay seated until I tell them it's OK to get out. They never hopped out into the water, actually.
After a very happy life filled with aquatic adventures, Ginger and Susie have since passed away. But David cannot do without the companionship of animals for very long. He now trains his newadopted pets to accompany him in the kayak, continuing the heartwarming tradition. Here's a man who seems to know the secret to happiness!
