He knew what was happening. This old horse kept in captivity in a Texas slaughterhouse knew that he could only count on himself to escape the worst.

At the beginning of January, when he spotted a group of volunteers who had come to save a group of miniature donkeys living in the same place as him, he decided to simply follow them. In a press release,Becky's Hope Horse Rescuein Frisco explained:

This skinny, grey gelding walked straight up to our trailer, past the gates, disregarding the commands of the kill lot employees. He was intent that this was his ride out of there.

As Sarah McGregor, the spokeswoman for Becky's Hope, the Texas organization who took in the Bubbles the horse, was giving animals a second chance to be saved before being sent to a slaughterhouse in Mexico. She told The Dodo:

Oftentimes, the horses or donkeys are old, or the owners lost their property, or the owners passed away or simply are unable to care for them and they are sold to auction. If they are not bought at auction by people or other farms, the slaughter pipeline will buy up all of the animals and resell them.

For the sanctuary volunteers, it was not an option to refuse the old horse access to the trailer, already full with the nine donkeys:

We stood there staring as this old guy with crumbled ears from frostbite waited patiently for the group of mini donkeys to catch up so he could jump on the 'freedom trailer' out of there. There was just no way we could leave him behind!

Bubbles now lives safe and sound at Becky's Hope refuge, where a number of people come to caress the nose of the famous horse who "saved himself." After escaping certain death, he now spends his days in peace thanks to the employees who dote on him with lots of attention.

Despite the happy ending, don't forget that Bubble's case is sadly an exception. Sarah McGregor of Becky's Hope Horse Rescue, reminds us: "We try and get as many as we can with the funds we raise. However, we simply cannot get all of them."
