Without a third partyto come look for the animal, the tow truck driver charged with cleaningupthe demolished car was forced to take him as well. While the man's family promised to come get Menino, no one actually cared to make the trip, and the dog stayed where he was, in the recked car at the junk yard.

Menino stayed like this for months, with relative indifference from the people around him, before someone finally noticed. The new security guard at the site, David Guimarães Santos, touched by the animal's predicament, slowly gained his trust and got close to him, becoming his friend.

The animal continued to live in the wreckage of the vehicle, passing his days at David's side, up until the day he found another job. But it was not an option to leave Menino behind. He explained to the siteCampo Grande:

I could not leave him there. If his rightful owners came, I'd give him up. But I will not leave it to anyone I do not know to take care of him.

Finally, at the end of July 2016, after spending tenmonths in the car, Menino was finally able to find happiness with David. He concluded, tellingGlobo News:

Now, it's only joy. When I arrive home, he runs to find me, jumping at the gate.

If you live in England, you can visit the RSPCA, and if you live in the United States, you can visit the ASPCA to get more information about pets available for adoption.Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, either due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Consider adopting before you shop, and visit your local shelters before going to a breeder. Every dog and cat deserves a fair chance at a forever home.
