For the past few years, faux fur clothing has become more and more popular - it has the appearance and insulating capacity of real fur, without costing numerous animal lives.

However, a scandal emerged in the beginning of April, when a client of the British brand, Missguided, realized that the shoes she had bought were made of real fur, rather than the fake fur as was advertised on the site and on the tag.The style was immediately removed from sale, and an investigation was launched into the suppliers.Tests conducted by laboratories concluded that the "fake" fur contained rabbit, cat, mink and raccoon dog hair.

While fur farms officially disappeared from the United Kingdom in 2003, the practice still exists in countries like China, Poland and France.

The "raccoon dog" one of the animals involved in this industry, isn't protected by European law concerning cats and dogs, because it's not officially considered a "dog."All of the brands concerned in this scandal have announced plans to introduce measures in order to better track the origin of these products.

Despite the non-stop fight by animal defense organizations like PETA and the foundation 30 Millions d'Amis, the number of animals killed for their pelts has augmented by 10% each year globally in the past decade. Europe contains 70% of breeding for fur in the world.

In addition to boycotting all garments made with animal fur, you can sign the petition initiated by 30 Millions d'Amis here demanding the closure of fur farms in Europe as well as a detailed label for all imported fur products (specifying the popular and scientific names, the country of origin, and the method of death.)
