The three-month-old miniature Chihuahua was accompanied by a hand-written note describing a sad case of domestic abuse which forced the woman to flee.

The note read:

Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much – please love and take care of him.

Thankfully, someone did find Chewy, and he was immediately taken to Connor and Millie's Dog Rescuewhere he was given medical treatment. They report that he is now healing well and full of energy.Immediately after word got out about his story, the applications started flying in from all over the country.

The shelter wrote on their Facebook page:

Please consider the hundreds if not thousands of "Chewys" loaded with love that are desperately seeking homes in shelters which are at max capacity, rescues are full! Please consider adopting another wonderful companion in his honor!

Despite the large amount of interest, Connor and Millie's would like to reunite Chewy with the mom who loved him, and managed to get the two of them out of the abusive situation.

The shelter representatives caution that it's always better to ask for help because it's hard to know who will find the precious pooch, but she did the right thing by helping Chewy escape as well. The rescue continued:

We will absolutely reunite should she come forward and wants him and is in the position to care for him safely. Her safety is a major concern and she may not be able to risk coming forward and CMDR asks that you respect her decision as it is hers and hers alone to make.

If she doesn't make contact within four weeks, the sweet puppy will go to one of the numerous loving families who are looking to adopt him.Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, either due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Consider adopting before you shop, and visit your local shelters before going to a breeder. Every dog and cat deserves a fair chance at a forever home.If you live in England, you can visit the RSPCA, and if you live in the United States, you can visit the ASPCA to get more information about pets available for adoption.
