Hansel and Gretel are the spitting image of the famous duo from the fairy tale: inseparable. They may each have their own bed, but they also sleep together in one of them, reportsThe Dodo.

Rick Tunison, who runs the Mahoning County Dog Warden's Office & Adoption in Youngstown, Ohio, found the two animals as strays in March. The pair gave him a hard time before finally letting themselves be caught.

A tin of food was the final temptation that drew in Hansel, who finally got in the van with Rick. Gretel followed after, not for the meat, but so as not to abandon her brother.Rick explained to The Dodo:
She jumped in the van and lay right next to him.

The volunteers at the shelter first tried to place them in separate kennels. But after seeing their connection, they decided to place them in the same enclosure and walk them together. But finding one home for two dogs would prove to be difficult. In April 2017, one of the volunteers decided to take a picture of Hansel and Gretel and post it online. The image went viral, and the two canines caught the eye and heart of Rachel Harris. The young woman had been considering adopting more than one animal, and the after seeing the picture of the pair, she immediately thought:
I had to have them.
But as a resident of Dallas, Texas, Rachel had to immediately contact the shelter in Ohio, only to find out that another family had already offered to take the two dogs.Luckily for Rachel, the adoption fell through, but the young woman still had to convince the volunteers that she was the perfect home for Hansel and Gretel. Rachel asked one of her friends who works at a rescue to call the shelter, and Rick was finally convinced.

Rachel's friends organized all the logistics, and Hansel and Gretel arrived at their new Dallas home at the end of May. Renamed Hank and Gigi, the two dogs have bonded with Rachel. She confided:
They could be sound asleep, I get up and they wake up and follow me wherever I'm going. They are on me all the time.

Rachel explained that it was her who was enormously lucky to cross paths with Hank and Gigi - rather than the reverse. She even opened them anInstagram account, which Devon, the volunteer who took the original viral photo, follows closely. Hank and Gigi even managed to separate themselves a bit, and sleep in their own beds - but still right next to each other!Devon is ecstatic to see the dogs so happy and loved.Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, either due to neglect, abuse or abandonment.
