The poor animal wasbadly affected by his abandonment, and found the transition to life in the shelter extremely difficult. He had been given up by his family after five years together when they sadly lost their house.Susan Smith, a spokesperson for theFranklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center, explains that Smokey needed the elephant with him so that he 'can take comfort with his favorite toy.'

Volunteers at the shelter even included a note outside of the dog's kennel to make sure that everyone knew that Smokey and the toy are a package deal.

Unfortunately, even accompanied by his favourite toy, the adorable canine was unable to adjustto life at the shelter. Scared and confused, he began to growl at volunteers and so could no longer be put up for adoption to the general public. Only a rescue association would be able to take him in.Luckily for Smokey, he was quickly spotted by the I Have A Dream Rescue Organization. Theycame to visit the shelter at the end of February and noticed the sweet dog with his toy, and were charmed straight away.

The association immediately offered to accomodate both Smokey and his elephant in the hopes of finding them a new family. Many people have already offered to temporarily look after the inseparable pair until a more permanent solution can be found. If his old family isn't able to come back for him, he will be put up for adoption.
Smokey and his elephant quickly became an online hit, and the shelter hopes that this sudden burst of interest will encourage more people to adopt and offer new homes to other dogs there.If you live in England, you can visit the RSPCA, and if you live in the United States, you can visit the ASPCA to get more information about pets available for adoption.Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, either due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Consider adopting before you shop, and visit your local shelters before going to a breeder. Every dog and cat deserves a fair chance at a forever home.
