The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are investigating the koala's death and performing an autopsy to shed light on the incident. They have discovered that the koala, nicknamed Brooloo, was dead before he was screwed to the post, meaning that if the person who did this is caught, they will probably not face animal cruelty charges. However, they may still be prosecuted since it is illegal to touch wild koalas, even if they're dead.

Koalas are seen as one of Australia's national animals, but face many threats to their survival in the wild. Human activity such as urban building projects, the destruction of their habitats, road accidents, natural predators, diseases and climate change have lead to them being classed as 'vulnerable' by the IUCN.Before European colonisers arrived in the 1800s, scientists estimate that there were around 10 million koalas in Australia. Today, there are no more than 100,000. If we don't work to protect them, they could disappear altogether. To help protect koalas in the wild, please donate to WWF.
