A Montreal resident has been given a 16-month prison sentence for the deliberate killing of a cat and a dog in 2022, marking one of the most severe penalties for animal cruelty in Quebec's history. In November, Marc-Antoine Côté pleaded guilty to two charges of intentionally and unlawfully killing an animal. The Montreal SPCA launched an investigation after receiving reports of Côté throwing a cat from his balcony. As the investigation progressed, they discovered another incident where he had seriously injured a dog, leading to its death. The dog's body was later found in the trash.
The Montreal SPCA's investigations division director, Alain Tessier, commented on the case, stating that the suffering endured by the animals in Côté's care was tragic.
