Eldad Hagar and Loreta Frankonyte, two volunteers from Hope For Paws, an American non-profit animal rescue organization, were on their way to rescue a pitbull, when they came across a dangerous surprise.
They discovered a scared, stray poodle roaming worryingly close to a busy freeway in Los Angeles.
They changed their plans immediately, knowing that they had to rescue the dog. Initially, they tried calling out to the poodle, in an attempt to veer him away from the road and towards them, but the frightened animal ran away as soon as the volunteers came close. He fled across a busy intersection, remarkably managing to avoid any cars along the way.
The volunteers had followed the lost dog for around half a mile, when he suddenly disappeared from their view. Following only their instict, they decided to check down a small side road, where there was an open gate, thinking that the canine may have taken refuge there.
Luckily, their intuition was correct and they found him cowering underneath a car. The scared poodle continued to avoid their advances and attempted to escape every time the rescuers got near.
Loreta had closed the open gate, but had not realized that there was a small hole in the corner, just about large enough for the dog. As the canine made a break for it, she was forced to grab him by his tail to stop him from escaping back onto the dangerous road.

In most cases, this is an extremely dangerous method to catch a dog and is not recommended. Loreta was lucky to not have been bitten or attacked by the dog. Hagar described the experience on the Hope For Paws Facebook page:
All of a sudden, he zoomed by me, and ran towards a hole in the fence. Loreta didn't miss a beat, and a second before he got away, she grabbed him by the tail and brought him back into the yard where we managed to secure him. Doing something like this is so dangerous because it can result in a very painful bite, so my hat is off to Loreta for her admirable bravery!
They put a collar on him, and as soon as they started to give him care and affection, the poodle relaxed, realizing that help had finally arrived.
The dog, who has since been named Sailor by his rescuers, was taken to the vet and found to be in a bad condition. His fur was so badly matted that it had to be shaved off completely.

After some love, attention, and a nice warm bath, Sailor started to look like a brand new dog.
As soon as he had received the medical attention that he needed and was healthy enough to leave the hospital, Sailor found a temporary home with a foster parent. However, he is still looking for his forever home. If you are interested in adopting Sailor, visit the Smooch Pooch Dog Rescue website here.
