Pet owners in Kent have been urged to remain alert in light of a series of peculiar attacks on cats. Since early December, an animal welfare organisation in Medway has received over 50 reports of cats being shaved using hair clippers. Animals Lost and Found, the organisation addressing the issue, has developed a map to record the locations of these strange occurrences.
Natasha McPhee, the founder of Animals Lost and Found, expressed her concern regarding the assaults. She pointed out that although the cats were not returning home visibly injured, such incidents have the potential to worsen. McPhee emphasised that the community is deeply worried about their feline friends.
The attacks have been reported in several towns throughout Kent, including Gillingham, Cranbrook, Ashford, and Ramsgate, as well as specific parts of East London. Patrick Hamby, RSPCA Chief Inspector, encouraged pet owners to report any cat shaving incidents to the charity or the police. He explained that taking immediate action may not be feasible due to a shortage of leads, but reporting assists authorities in comprehending the extent of the issue and pinpointing areas of concern.
Hamby also recommended certain preventative measures, such as keeping pets indoors at night. He highlighted the stress a cat would undergo if restrained by a stranger and shaved, which could lead the cat to become increasingly fearful and hesitant to venture outdoors.
