Probationary Police Officer Juan Farris saw all of it happen and immediately jumped into action. He explained:

He just kept running back and forth, was pretty excited. Kept trying to get water out of the lake and fell into the lake. I heard the splash. Once I heard, I turned over, I saw him swimming, just went over there and grabbed him. I was hoping he didn't get too far, because it would've been quite the battle if I had to jump in.

Officer Farris only completed the police academy six-weeks earlier, and he's already saving lives. After he rescued the canine from the water, he patiently coaxed him into a leash, so he wouldn't run into traffic, before bringing him to the local animal control.

Unfortunately, the dog was not microchipped and doesn't have a collar, so police are asking for anyone who might have information on the owner to come forward by calling312-742-5870.If no one comes forward to claim him, Officer Farris will be looking to adopt him.
