John Hwang has been photographing animals in shelters for a long time. His touching images help to capture the hearts of dogs and cats who are too often overlooked and helps them get adopted.

One afternoon at theBaldwin Park Animal Shelter, he stumbled upon a senior dog cowering in the corner. The 10-year-old canine seemed to have completely given up.

So that's why Hwang was so surprised when she proved all his assumptions wrong. He toldThe Dodo:
My initial thought was this dog was timid or depressed and probably wouldn't interact with me. I was surprised when she came right up to me when she saw me.

Despite some difficulties walking, she did her best to wander over to him.
She seemed uncoordinated, but the way she moved was also endearing. She was so raggedy, but her heart was perfect.
It only took a moment for her to get over her nerves and press herself against the fencing, yearning to be touched.

We probably could have sat there all day. She loved the company.

Well just a few days after the photos were posted, the senior pup got amazing news. She was being rescued!The sweet dog, newly named Annabelle, was spotted byTaunya Huffman Henley atLeashes of Love Rescue, Inc.. She knew she had to do something to get her out of the high kill shelter.

Now she's living with a new foster mom and foster siblings where she gets all the attention and love she needs. She is fighting several medical issues, including a tumor and dental issues, but is resting and enjoying her new life.She will be put up for adoption by Leashes of Love, if you're interested, you can contact them, here.
