Like many young people, 26-year-old Texan Chris Mendiola decided to get a tattoo. But not just any tattoo; the same tattoo that he had found on his dog, Bear. The young man was horrified that anyone would ever tattoo a dog, let alone try to change their appearance in any other way, and quickly became angry about what his pet had gone through. He told Buzzfeed:
I just thought, wow, that kind of sucks.

He decided to get the same tattoo for himself in solidarity with his 4-legged friend, sharing his decision on Facebook with a photo and a small message:
For those of you who know bear know that he has a tattoo given to him from some previous owners. It sickens me to know that people actually tattoo their pets. So tonight I got his tattoo.

Unfortunately, Chris didn't quite get the reaction he expected. It didn't take long for his friends and thousands of other internet users to point out that he might have jumped to conclusions a bit too quickly; Bear's tattoo was, in fact, one found fairly commonly on dogs... Indicating that the dog in question has been neutered.

Of course, thousands of people found the slip up hilarious and it swiftly went viral, attracting the laughter of people around the world as it spread to Reddit, then Twitter.

Chris has since tried to set the record straight:
We talked to our vet about the tattoo. I knew what it meant.

Whether peopole will believe him is another matter, but he says that he doesn't care:
They can believe and say what they want. But the tattoo is not for them, it’s for me. I get to carry my dog with me everywhere I go. I can just look down and know I have a part of him with me at all times.
Luckily, he doesn't seem to have lost his sense of humor about the situation. "A lot of people are saying 'I'd do anything for my pet,' but would you?" he added. "Would you get a neutered sign tattooed on your bicep?"
