Garbage collectors in Daytona Beach, Florida, made a shocking discovery when they opened a discarded box, headed for the local dump, while at work, only to find four abandoned kittens inside.

They immediately took the felines out of the confined space and brought them to the ARNI Foundation, a local shelter. There, the babies were given a primary inspection by a veterinarian who determined that the little bunch were malnourished and dehydrated, but otherwise in good health and would make it.Only four days after their rescue, the kittens had already begun to show sign of improvement. A member of the ARNI Foundation told the site IHeartCats:
The kitties are doing great! They are eating wet kitten food and drinking formula from a dish. They were like little skeletons when they were brought in but now they look much healthier. They are very affectionate and love to be held.

While the little cats have made it through the worst, they are still in need lots of love and attention to enable them to get stronger, particularly without the presence of their mother.Volunteers estimate that in just over a month they will be strong enough to be put up for adoption and start their new lives with their new families.

Sadly, this isn't the first time that unwanted felines have been abandoned and left alone in a box in this area. Only six months ago six kittens were found in a cardboard box outside of a shelter that had previously shut down.

According to the Space Coast Feline Network, despite the closure of the shelter, numerous people continue to abandon their pets there.Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, either due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Consider adopting before you shop, and visit your local shelters before going to a breeder.
