They were sent fromNikolaev, in Ukraine, and were supposed to arrive at theSamer al-Husainaw zoo in Damascus, Syria, but the transfer was delayed and the association had to pressurize a judge to allow the opening of the crate. The little ones were finally freed and they were covered in maggots.

The judge then authorized the association to take the babies under its wing and to help them recover. Animals Lebanon hope to send the cubs into a sanctuary once they will be ready, instead of the zoo they were destined for.

Before their rescue they only had barcodes for names, but now the three babies are called May, Tanya and Antoun. They each have their own, unique personality.Jason Mier, a member of the association, explained:
Antoun is more shy than the others but they all play well with each other and are much more settled in now.

The tiger cubs were vaccinated and are currently recovering from their terrible journey in the association's shelter. Sadly, they are still not completely out of harm's way and still risk being shipped off to Syria.

They had not received the proper vaccinations so all three were vaccinated. Only one tiger was found to have a microchip, though documents state that all three should have been microchipped.They are improving – but they are still at risk! Big cats can be worth tens of thousands of dollars on the black market. The owner is fighting to get them back, and we are fighting for the tigers and rule of law.Siberian tigers are protected under the Convention on International Tarde of Endangered Species (CITES). They can only be traded under very specific circumstances, and only when a number of other conditions are met.Officials have already stated that the transport conditions do not meet the regulations of CITES or IATA Live Animal Regulations. The owner, exporter and shipper is one man listed as 'Private Entrepreneur'...Animals Lebanon submitted today our case asking for the animals not just to be seized, but to be permanently confiscated.The Ministry of Agriculture, Judge of Urgent Matters and Customs have all made the right decisions.
