On Sunday, August 20, the New Zealand Police announced, with a heavy heart, that their beloved mascot, Elliot the guinea pig, had suddenly passed away.The four and a half-year-old animal spent his days with a family in the country's capital, Wellington, but was also a key part of many police communication operations.

For several months, the little animal had appeared in many of the police department's online posts to spread his messages for safe driving and good behavior, complete with a police vest and hat. The guinea pig always spread his message with plenty of happiness and humor:
Did you know that a piggie's top speed can be around 9km/hr? Not me, I have gone a bit overboard on the carbs lately and need to lighten up, so I go even slower. I am not too fast and that's the way I like it - slow is safe! Keep this in mind when you are driving near any schools tomorrow.

The police department was filled with emotion on the day that their little mascot passed away. They took him on one last ride and then the guinea pig passed away peacefully in his uniform, an honor reserved for only those who have dedicated their lives to the force. The New Zealand police announced his passingdeclared in a Facebook statement:
He is greatly missed by his Wellington family, especially his eight and six-year-old humans, who loved to care for, and play with him. He will also be missed by his police family, who he enjoyed working for over the last year, spreading prevention messaging about crossing roads, safer driving and avoiding burglaries. He was a chilled-out, relaxed little fella who would curl up in a ball on your lap like a cat, but was brave enough to face up to bigger animals thinking he was a dog.Four feet in heaven - we will miss you little guy.
