60-Year-Old Elephant Forced To Work Day And Night Can’t Believe He’s Rescued A Second Time

By

Nwom is a 60-year-old elephant who was rescued from a life of logging by Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in Thailand. His owner had wanted to retire him, but BLES did not have the money to buy him upfront, since they were also taking in three other bull elephants.

They decided to "lease" all four from their owners. Unfortunately, the owner of Nwom got a more enticing offer. After the elephant had spent some time in the sanctuary, making friends and getting comfortable with the environment, his owner sold him to a trekking company to give rides to tourists.

BLES felt that he was much to old to be taught a new trade so late in life, working all day long in the hot sun. They started a crowdfunding page in order to raise the money necessary to buy Nwom back.Thankfully, their efforts were successful, and they raised $24,000 to buy his freedom. On October 18,the organization drove the 375 miles each way to where the trekking company was located, in order to bring their boy home.

They posted updates on their Facebook page updating followers on their route. According to the post:

As we drove up the road towards BLES, Nwon lifted his trunk as high as the rising morning sun. He was smelling the air and purring, as if he knew he was home.

His friends were very happy to see him, and the elephant seemed to relieved to be back with his adopted family who came to his rescue not once, but twice.
