Leonard is a Pit Bull like so many others. He's loyal, powerful and quick. However, because of his aggressive nature, no one wanted to adopt him, and he was condemned to euthanasia shortly after he was abandoned at a shelter.

While he spent his days at the refuge wondering if he would ever get out, Jim Alloway wanted to give him a second chance. The man, director of the refuge where Leonard was living, has been in contact with law enforcement since 1992, ashe asses a number of dogs every year who could potentially become police dogs.To him, no doubt about it, Leonard had the require qualities to make an excellent police dog. And although he would be the first Pit Bull to be placed in the program, his trainers were smitten. Terry Mitchell, chief of police, who personally takes care of him, explained:
I couldn’t have asked for a better dog. I spent about 10 minutes with him and knew this was the dog for us.

He dismissed the stereotype that Pit Bulls are violent dogs:
If somebody robs a bank, we don’t just go find out what nationality they are and round up all the rest and assume there will be no more bank robberies. It just can’t happen that way. It’s the individual, and it’s the same with dogs.
Leonard can now forget about the time he spent at the shelter. Thanks to Mitchell's instinct, who saw the enormous potential, he will be able to use his talent as the first police Pit Bull in the history of Ohio.
