Christi Camblor, co-founder of the associationCompassion Without Borders, was driving around in her mini van in the streets ofPuerto Peñasco, Mexico, when she spotted a German shepherd lying on an old mattress, reportsThe Dodo.

The dog was in a particularly bad state and was just skin and bones. This is not uncommon in the streets of Mexican cities, where thousands of stray dogs fend for themselves each day. Christi's association specializes in the rescue of sick, injured and neglected street dogs.After speaking to some of the neighbors, Christi learnt that the pup had no owner. She explained:
They said that he was indeed homeless, and he'd been there for about a month, and that he was blind. Everyone in the area knew him as the old, blind dog who lived in the trash pile.

Christi carefully approached the stray, named Don Felipe, so as not to scare him. He turned out to be very friendly and allowed the woman to caress him and ate all the treats she gave him.
Once she knew that there was trust between them, Christi loaded the pup into her car and transported him to the veterinary clinic. She said:
He actually sat in my lap in the back of the van. He was so responsive to the slightest kindness, just leaning into me and enjoying his pets. He would have felt confused, for sure. He'd probably never been in a car, but he seemed ready to trust.

A medical examination revealed numerous health problems, including anemia, arthritis and an auto-immune condition that could have caused his blindness.
Thanks to all the care and attention, Don Felipe slowly started to gain weight and become stronger. And even better, he regained some of his sight. After an entire month in recovery at the shelter, the German shepherd was taken to California to be taken care of in the American branch of the association. And only a little while later, a woman from Boston applied to adopt the sweet dog after falling in love with his kind spirit.

Don Felipe will soon be going to his new home. But the situation is still extreme for thousands of other dogs who live on the streets in Mexico. Christi continued:
There's virtually no programs that provide access to low-cost or free spay and neuter, unlike in the U.S. There are also not very many animal shelters or adoption programs. In most parts of Mexico, animal control consists of animals being rounded off the streets and electrocuted.
