Pretty much everyone knows that you should never give chocolate to a dog because it comes with serious health risks. However, there are lots of other food items which are just as dangerous, which might surprise you. Here are 9 foods to never give to your four-legged friend.

1. Cheese

While certainly tempting for your fur ball, cheese can make them seriously ill and can provoke gas, diarrhea and vomiting. Cheese contains enzymes which dogs have trouble digesting.

2. Macadamia nuts

By ingesting macadamia nut, your dog can experience a general weakness and inability to walk. He could start staggering, develop depression, tremble or experience hypothermia. Products containing macadamia nuts provoke a dangerous toxic reaction.

3. Milk

Dogs, like humans, can also be lactose intolerant. Milk contains lactic sugar, an enzyme which dogs have difficulty digesting. While drinking milk doesn't present any immediate danger, repeated consumption can cause diarrhea, vomiting and intestinal problems.

4. Onions

Onions contain potentially toxic components for your companion in sufficient quantities. Onions damage red blood cells and a blood transfusion may be necessary.

5. Caffeine

Caffeine contains Methylated xanthine, part of the purine family. Methylated xanthine has an effect on the canine nervous system which can cause vomiting, agitation and heart palpitations, which can sometimes lead to death.

6. Bread dough

Bread dough can provoke a toxic reaction when it's digested because of its uncooked yeast content. In addition, the yeast can ferment in the dog's stomach and intestines, causing a painful accumulation of gas. This can result in a stomach or intestinal rupture. And finally, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.

7. Apple cores

Never leave an apple core in reach of your dog. It contains cyanogenic glycosides, also known as cyanide. The ingestion of an apple core can cause confusion, difficulties breathing, hyperventilation, seizures, a state of shock and even a coma.

8. Avocados

The entire avocado - from the peel to the fruit - contains a toxin called persine, which transforms the animal's metabolism and can cause intestinal problems or respiratory problems. The pit also poses a choking hazard which can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract.

9. Grapes

The components present in grapes present a severe toxicity for your four-legged friend. They can cause rapid kidney failure. Your dog can also start to vomit, have violent diarrhea and fall into a lethargic state. In the case of kidney failure, death can follow after three or four days.

Be very careful and never leave these foods around where your dog can get them, especially if your pooch is curious!
